Good morning… today is the 20th. of June… 2004
Baghdad is quiet and the weather outside is nice…
Thank God we didn't hear any explosions today…
How nice the quiet, peaceful life is…without fears, without worries…
*******
No body understands the trend of the terrorist organizations which appeared these days…
No Arab or Muslim approves of them…
They are merely criminal organizations, whose profession is killing, blood shedding, and devastating… which is the further away from our morals and culture…
We are peaceful nations, our past and present is merciful and composed…
We do not like using force unless in self and country defense, and these are humanitarian traits…
As for these terrorist organizations, they are set to destroy people during their quiet daily lives…when they go to their jobs, or their children go to school…
I do not know what evil mind has come up with that…I wish (he) would be damned in earth and heaven…
*********
In the morning, while I was going to my work, I was driving quietly in a narrow street, when I was surprised by a car jamming me from the left. I thought it was a pick-up… I wanted to open the window and shout at him: hay, you fool…look out!
But I was surprised to discover it was an American military car, followed by a convoy…then the truck was ahead of me, the soldier who was in charge on top of it had his face towards me…so he waved to me, in his angry, stupid way to stop to the right, so they would pass….
I took a path to the right, and I stopped…
He could have waited until I passed, then they would continue, but he preferred this brutish behavior because he couldn't find anyone to oppose him, or criticize him.
I kept thinking to my self, … if I would have got out of my car, angry, and argued with him … of course he wouldn't have listened, or respected me…. Perhaps he would have shot me!!...
But for the first time in my life I wished I had an American nationality…
That I would have gone out, and talked to him, then threw my American passport in his face, so he would understand that I was angry, … that he is harming all the American people by these foolish, rude behaviors…
And I remembered the people who told me the story of an Iraqi man, who was killed two days ago, while driving at Al-Saidiia, as he was surprised by the convoy, and found himself suddenly, accidentally among them, so they shot him. He died instantly. The traffic stopped, all the Iraqis were silent, and the convoy went triumphantly on its way…
Then I would get letters from some Americans, asking me why I do not like America???
And my answer would be: this is the ugly face of America, which I do not like…

And I remembered Joe, the soldier whose letter I put on the site a few months ago, as he said that there are some American soldiers who were bad, calling them War Dogs…
Yes… these were the ugly face that makes us refuse, daily, the presence of occupation forces upon our land …
And these are the reason we sympathize with the Iraqi resistance that fire R.B.J. missiles in front of our eyes, on an American convoy, then the Iraqi would withdraw, and disappear, while the people smile…
The foolish, aggressive conducts of the occupation soldiers alone escalates the violence against them…and this is a normal reaction… so, no one should blame…
**********
As much as the stupid behaviors that hurt the Iraqi's feelings accumulate, as much as it would be the strong reason of an approaching revolution, like the 1920's Revolution against the British occupation…
For the ache has gathered in the Iraqi's hearts against the British occupation, and its foolish behaviors, devoid of respect, to the feelings of the country's population.
Normally, you see the people are silent, but that is the first stage, then the stage of explosion would come, and no one will be able to muffle that explosion, nor put an end to it…
This is the way things normally move on in life…and the smart man should comprehend, and be ware, the foolish would continue in his ignorance, and foolishness, then pay the high price…
********
Some people have ancient history…thousands of years before Christ…. The Iraqi people are one of these. A long history in culture, education, knowledge, civilization,…and wars.
The Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilizations… and early writings on clay boards, and drawings of a theory very much like Pythagoras, the Hamurabi emery and his amazing, fair laws, some says: An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. The Gilgamesh epic, his long quest for immortality, having the deep philosophy and intelligence of the pre- history man…perhaps the same intelligence and worries lived by the 21st. century man, perhaps even more clearly, having not yet being polluted by the media and the technology of materialistics.
And I remembered yesterday one of the "deeds" of the British occupation of Iraq, the excavations for ancient Iraqi antiquities, and then these antiquities were confiscated, and put in European museums, till this day.
The question is: who gave them the right? Isn't this our history, our heritage??? Why would they steel it, and show it at their museums, as if it belongs to them? And who would give it back to us???
**************
And I remember the words of my Iraqi professor, whom I met one day by chance in Amman, … he was a university professor, at the end of his fifties, his wife was British, so was his nationality… he taught me Pluming engineering at the university of Baghdad. I was so happy when I met him after all the years of my graduation. We discussed many things…about the hardships of immigration, living outside one's country…then we talked about Iraq and the Iraqis, and he told me a sentence I haven't forgotten, he said: (It's a matter of Genes. Every nation carries the genes of their ancestors, the Iraqis carry in their blood a deep, old civilization, … do not consider this a trifle matter…it is very effective on the personality of people.).
I always remember him. Whenever the matters got worst on Iraq and the Iraqis, I remember their old history, their strength and patience, then feel optimistic that they are a nation that wouldn't be defeated, nor surrender to those who want to wipe-out their identity…
********
whenever I see young Iraqi men, the same ages as my boys – Raid, Majid, and Khalid, writing essays and poems filled with national pride, their love of Iraq, its unity and independence, as if they were grown men, I smile, and my heart dances in joy. I remember the words of my professor … Do not fear for Iraqis and their generations; they carry the old, strong genes…genes filled with love, passion for Iraq, its land, its welfare, and dignity…
Then I remember the poem by Al-Sayaab, the famous Iraqi poet, while he was away from Iraq:
The wind squalls at me: Iraq…
And the waves wail to me: Iraq… Iraq, none but Iraq!
The sea as vast as could be and you as far as could be…
The sea before you...Iraq…
……
……
I wonder how a traitor can...betray!
Would a man betray his land?
If he betrays the meaning to be, how can he be?
The sun in my country is more beautiful than all else, the darkness...
Even the darkness there is more beautiful, for it embraces Iraq…
********
All the love, all the beautiful wishes … to the land of Iraq, Tigris and the Euphrates, the mountains, plains, and valleys of Iraq…
To the tall, proud palms…who remind me of my mother's matronly face…
I don't know why, but they always seem smiling to me, in spite of ordeals, as a patient Iraqi mother.
May God keep all safe and cool, upon Iraq and the Iraqis…
May God keep all safe and cool, upon Iraq and the Iraqis…
May God keep all safe and cool, upon Iraq and the Iraqis…

Few reflections on the not-so-nice not-our-friend-anymore Jeff

oh, isn't it funny that our American friend Jeff turned red all at once??? I mean... The upper class and the proletariat...??? Who is talking here? One thing you don't know about Faiza, as soon as she finished her education, she got married, and she went with dad to another country joining a leftist party to help the refuges, that was her honey moon, ...And... If u read her last war diary ( which isn't yet translated into English) she said "she can understand why some people might loot goods...But why burn down ministries? Why loot the museum? Why burn old documents?" what should an Iraqi person do when he sees all this happening? Cheer for the burning down of his country's capital???? It's easy for u to repeat what wolfwoitz say when he speak about freedom and long repressed people...But for someone seeing all this happening to his own city... Say, if some ghetto boys go looting the towns, imagine Wachington DC looted from the white house to the smallest grocery shop, would u be happy? And if they brought down the whole government buildings and equipments and your country is in total chaos and devastation, what would u feel?
Faiza always sympathized with the poor people and helped them as much as she could...You you wouldn't imagine how much of her income goes to poor people, there is difference between sympathizing with them and understanding what they're doing, and between feeling happy for watching your city burnt down, robbed and humiliated
oh i forgot that as a Marxist, you'd clap for the wrath of the repressed proletariat.....
oh, u'd only do that when it serves your interest... As if Americans are killing the poor repressed shia in Karbala and Althawra you wouldn't mind anyone calling them thugs or scum... In fact u'd go and call them righteous posts.....
as Juan Cole put it: the neo-cons are now killing the marsh Arabs who they long criticized Saddam because he killed them....
and for one thing.... Most of Iraqi bloggers are from that evil upper class... The class the affords to know that good English, to have PC's and learn how to use internet... I've discussed the westernized boys in an earlier post...Go check it out....

* and as i said before, my parents are two professional engineers who worked in Saudi Arabia, Jordan and then Iraq for over 25 years to make the money that we have now.... Should we apologize that we did good? Every community has its classes... And its not up to you, knowing so little about us, to judge if we are spoiled brats who don't care about our country or about our people and only care for our class...
Faiza isn't an aristocrat.. She is from a poor family... And as all all Iraq's from her generation she got the chance to have good free education, the children of the poor families were able to get their chances and go free all the way up till she graduated as an engineer, and that was social mobility...This isn't a very unusual story...( are the American appointed folks going to cancel the public sector in education and make people pay for sending their kids to school??? And we know who won't be able to send his children to school afterwards)

*and u know what.... It's funny how u equate your views with democracy: she doesn't agree with U... She's then an enemy of democracy... Have u even been reading what she has been saying for the last couple of months, or were u too busy picking those quotes u think are anti-American and show them to your audience while u r happy for being a brilliant detective?"

*and yes, most Iraqis don't actually like the US government that much.. Too bad.... Are they ungrateful by nature? I don't think that there is a group of people who are "stupid" or" ignorant" or just"evil" by birth.... The history of the ME didn't start by the glorious bombing/invasion/liberation of 2003.... I think there was a chance for good feelings in general after president Wilson declaration in 1918..But it was all gone after 1948..... That's the background..... Add to this the close history which isn't a very pretty one...And the recent people who had to lose their loved ones "and no, saying that Saddam would have killed them isn't a good answer"..... So Saddam killed us that makes it good for you to come and kill us and we don't have to complain becaue this time it's for good... Now wake up... Saddam killed people who dared oppose him and everyone who did that was his enemy... So he also had his "nice" justifications for the murders... He didn't kill people out of the blue... He killed only the "bad people", the "anti-revolutionary" people ,so the rest of the "good" citizens of Iraq can all live happily...."

*add to this the loss of security.. The sense of loss....And the loss of national pride.....And the funny fact that people don't like foreigners with big guns to come and tell them what to do....And all the stupid mistakes the US has been doing here in the last year.. And you'll get a picture of how it is...

*now let's talk about polls... Yes... Iraqis were happy because Saddam was removed from power... But they didn't actually want the US to stick around or anything.... They just were patient and pragmatic.... Now there patience is over and as Faiza put it:" thanks for the US for removing Saddam..You have done us a big favor .. Thanks a lot....But now please go home"

*now u want to talk about immorality...Yes we view American society as lacking many moral aspects and family values... That's your way and u chose it... Be happy with it ..Stick to it or change it... But we don't want to be like U... We don't want our society to be like yours... You can listen to your Iraqi pro-American mouth-pieces telling u how great the American society is... But no, that's not a common belief on this side of the world... Now if this blog was supposed to let u know what people on this side of the world think and how they live my mother then is supposed to tell u what she thinks.... If u pick to listen to someone -oh, from the other side, so that gives him more credibility- who tells u how great u are, then its good for your self-esteem but it won't get u any closer to the truth... If u need that lift up try the shrink....

*now u want to talk about Baathists... a Baathist is someone who joined the Baathist party, the funny thing that no one was allowed to work for the government if he wasn't a Baathist, no one was allowed to be a teacher if he wasn't a Baathist, baathist used to come to our schools and say "this schools is exclusive for Baathists, who doesn't join leaves", everyone was forced to be a Baathists, but you know what? My family never did that....Sympathizing with the Baath? haha, hahahaha, people who know us were always worried that we will all be killed one day cause we criticize Baathist in front of strangers.. Nope... We never did...Baathist don't make their kids read animal farm and 1984..... Baathist don't even know there is someone with the name of Eric Blair, u want to see how Baathists think and write: here, have a tour into what a Baathist's blog is like:http://greatiraq.blogspot.com/
and look here there's no one in Iraq who is safe now ( a population of 30 million) was able to carry a gun and go fight the Baath..... Those people were the dead ones ( with their families of course)..... Now u either say that the 30 millions were collaborators or u try to understand and sympathize with Iraqi poor people, you see, the food-the health-everything was a public sector... And everyone got food rations from the country
Baath is a word equivalent to government, if you want to live, you must have electricity, water and food, that all comes from the Baathists government, the Baath was the highest authority, Saddam used to say that Baath controls the government, its the power, its above the government, its everywhere and everything, if you don't want to deal with the government and live alone in the mountain drinking from the river, if you chose not to do that, live in the city, and try not to put dirt in your hands, we never joined the Baath, we never had Baathists friends, our morals and principles were always against that.
see, as the sanctions were implemented on Iraq, technology stopped coming, because companies refused to deal with Iraq cause they were too afraid to be put on the black list, i remember dad corresponding with international companies, and gets responses as "we are very interested in your market, but sorry we cant deal with Iraq" so the result is no new technology at all, water treatment plants, as an example, that are used in Iraq are the same were installed at 70s and 80s, so dad, as an engineer and a business men, tried to bring that new technologies to Iraq, so in a conference about water and water treatment in Iraq, that was held by Iraq experts in water filed working in the government, and opened by ministers who their ministries are involved in this sector, we had a corner showing water treatment techniques, after the conference was over, all the guests, including the ministers came to see these advanced instruments and technology, that is where their pictures where taken, the pictures that are published in the family business website, and that is the incident that you, detective, used to know that we Baathists, blessed by Baathists, and all that talk, i think that gives a hint about the credibility of your judgments.

*u say my mother is like wahabis!!!!!! What a joke.... She is a SHIA.. SHIA... SHIA... Can u get that? Its so funny how uninformed you are, calling a shea person "wahabi" is like calling a very religious catholic a "protestant" !!
are you in this world? And you teach foreigners, you must know better.
and do u know what wahabism is all about in the first place?? ummm...Didn't think so ...

* and it's a joke that u have to be a ...Ahem... Someone like the incredibly "friends with America and Israel" 3 brothers to be called democracy friend...
i mean.. Come on... Wake up....
are they reporting lies? No... They aren't
they just tell u the news the way u like it, the views u r happy to hear to get the pets on their back from their masters...
they'll tell u what u want to hear with perfect English and fox-news terminology...
u call Arab-nationalism evil.... And due to many reasons ( Saddam's nationalist propaganda, sectarianism, the sanctions years, first gulf war and stories of what happened to Iraq's in rafh-ha camp to mention a few) there is in some areas of Iraq anti-Arab feelings... They'll tell u about this and make u happy with righteous posts about the stupid Arabs, the filthy Arabs, the crazy Arabs, the non-democratic Arabs, the ignorant Arabs.... Most Iraqis won't like to criticize Arabs ( since they are Arabs BTW) to foreigners...And I'm sure after we are out of this quagmire, those feelings would be all gone....
u call the anti-bush American bush self-loathing , well my dear, it goes both ways....
and one more thing... Most Iraqis want stability, security, freedom and democracy.... This doesn't mean they agree with America's ways of achieving these goals as the moth-pieces are telling U...
they are the minority in supporting your policies... U don't have to be pro-occupation and pro-war to be a pro-democracy and get the blessing from Jeff that u r indeed a friend of democracy....
aw aw wait...will you report me to the CIA too like you did earlier -like you said- to one of the people in your comment section? you are a true American! real democracy protector, and sure with all these friends from the CIA that makes you one great credible trusted un-biased recource.

Ms Faiza,

I read your blog ! Communication between different people , through the
blogs, the internet, or face-to-face , will save the world. Our leaders
are liars. They want war to make profit.

Sadly, most Americans do not care if Iraqi's die. The media won't
report it, it is not mentioned. One American dies in Saudi Arabia and it's in
the news for three days. Hundred die in Fallujah and there is silence.

America will stay in Iraq forever unless you force us out. The
Philippines did it through mass demonstrations in 1986. Yet our military snuck
back into the Philippines recently. The other way is through armed
resistance. These are the sad facts.

Please keep writing your blog.

Ben in the U.S.
******************************
well, thank you Ben..
you are the American kind that we all Iraqis want him to be our friend...and to help us to get the occupation troops out of our country....
when there are Americans like you..we`ll never lose the hope..
and yes we should use all the ways to get them out...out..out
of Iraq..

Dearest Aunt Faiza,

I read your blog every morning when I get to work. In a way you become the voice of all of my aunts who might live a mere 10 minutes away from you in Baghdad. In a way, you've become an aunt I have for so long, longed to listen to her so wise words. Those words of wisdom that are irreplaceable, and resonant of strong cultural values. Thank you for making time out of your busy day to educate the world about the importance of life, especially the struggle in time of war.

I was born and raised in the old country, and moved to America about 12 years ago, one year after the Gulf War. I went through the Iraq-Iran and the Gulf War. But, this is a very different, personal kind of war. I cannot even begin to imagine the daily hardships of ordinary Iraqis. I must have literally over 500 members of my close family living in Iraq. The pictures they send us over the internet are happy normal ones. I think they are merely covering their daily struggle of staying in the spirit. But, here I am living in this "great free world" wanting to just go back to my home and live the pain of my Iraqi brothers and sisters.

You spoke of a man 2 days ago who was shot being close to the Americans, and then your experiences with them and what would have happened to you. My father's cousin was shot seven times in the head last week in Baghdad at a check point. He was in a hurry and must have not heard them asking him to stop. They shot him at such a close range, they severed his head from his body. Just a note.....he was a 56 year old doctor hurrying to the hospital to save the life of those hurt in a bombing earlier in the day.

I am not sure people in America know the meaning of our culture; the culture of the Sumerians, Assyrians, and the Chaldeans. I don't think they will ever understand that the root of their ancestors might very well be connected to the land of old Mesopotamia. I mean up to three years ago, so-called "educated" college students were still asking me where Iraq was located. One student asked me if Iraq was in South America! Let me tell you, the education system in this country has no meaning. People here don't even study geography and are not even forced to study World History. They can instead choose to study American History only. I wan to know what anyone can learn from the rest of the world if all they read about is the American Civil War. Here I am, waiting impatiently to begin my Masters in International Relations in the U.S. and all I wonder about is, "Will I ever be as educated as an Iraqi my age?" I think the answer is clear! I don't think so! I have lived almost half of my life outside! My daily struggle has been educating people what our culture is all about. Why we think the way we do. Why the American kind of freedom does not intrigue us for a moment! I don't care who you are in Iraq and what your religion is; everyone thinks the same way. Everyone is in this struggle to keep the tradition, the values, the civilization of our ancestors alive!

I don't understand why anyone would want to have this so-called American freedom. Let me tell you what freedom means in the US and I will be very frank. It means that you can move out at the age of 18 from your parents' home and you will never have to speak to them ever again if you don't want to. It means you can say and do whatever your want to anyone without many consequences! It means you have the right to have sex at the age of 12, get pregnant, have a baby; live with someone you are not married to...all legally! it means you can do drugs and get a slap on the wrist! It means that you never have to work a day and have as many children as you want, because the government will pay for everything! It also means that you can be as ignorant as you want because the government likes you that way. They don't want you to know other people, so you don't have to really think for yourself and have your own opinion! Therefore, it will be much easier on the mind to send your 18-year-old troops abroad and commit mass murder on civilians legally! It means that you become such a superior human beyond the rest of the world because your government says so, and therefore the government becomes the "God" of all nations! Now, is this all the freedom Iraqis want? I PRAY TO GOD IT WILL NEVER BE!

Now that I have taken this out of my chest, I feel much better. But just a note to anyone reading this at all. I must say that there are millions of Americans who are highly educated and they see the wrong in their American system and hate this idea of war, which closely resembles what they went through during Vietnam. The US consists of diverse people and almost half of those people do not the support the "effort" with Iraq.

Dearest mother....would you please explain to your friend Lori in America that most of Iraqis all highly educated and can read and write and that we don't live in the dark ages. And those people who bomb Iraq in "our name" are playing their own game and are looking out for their own interest in a very vulnerable Iraq.

I apologize for the long note, but if you have gotten to this point in my email, I thank you very much for listening! Thank you for posting those photos.

On a different note, what happened to Salam and Raed? Your son has not posted for a while, and there is no sign of life to Salam! I hope they are well. I have read all of Salam's blog, which I learned about back in March and moved on to Raed's and yours. Their politics is right on the dot.

Sincerely,

Reem
**********************
well thank you my dear Reem..
I want Americans to raed your letter and understand your feeling as arabic christian girl living in their society, and making a comparison between their values and ours..
you are christian..and they are also...let them know that it`s a matter of different cultures, not different religions.
yes I know that Americans think the freedom and happiness is coming for Iraqis with the occupation troops and their western values...
don`t worry about Iraq and Iraqis..
as I wrote in my last Arabic blog...they can`t change our values and principles...it`s a matter of genetic from our old great-grarndparent...
