Good morning...
this is faiza from baghdad..
today is the anniversary of the war agaist iraq.
i have nothing to say more than every day blogs..but im going to put my real diaries during the war since 18/3/003 , when raed finishes the translation of my last blog 12/3 for this month..
in this morning, in my way to open our showroom , i noticed there was no more soldiers in the streets, no humvies, no traces for american troops..
that made me smile...they looked as they had been suddenly disappeared:)
i think...thats better for them and us...
if they are going to stay inside the military camps,,it will be better and safer
for them and us..and if they act like a forgotten soldiers, we could appreciate
that....i hope this year everything will be better than the last hard one...
specially the security of iraqi people ,and economy is going to be better to give us a good chance to rehabilitate our country and our life,,the way we believe in...

Today, I received an email from a regular reader, asking me to give my vision about how to enhance the situation of Iraqi women in the next period.
I think it’s a great topic
And I will try to say my opinion to give the point of view of my age and experience.
******
At my university years, I used to be an active woman who loves to discuss and argue the women issues, and ready to fight for the women rights.
I wanted to erase all the differences between men and women, to have a complete equality between them. I was a young passionate activist in her twenties that goes to the university … and read a lot of books about the “liberation” of women.
That young girl didn’t find the behavior of a man giving her his seat in the bus acceptable at all... there was this rebel inside me that looks straight into his eyes and says: You dumb, I request the equality for women, why do you treat me as a weak vulnerable creature?? And I refuse to take his seat. Usually men blush and get shocked...
Now I think the real words in their heads used to be: “where did this weirdo come from”
I used to demand the liberation of women from all old habits and traditions, with a strong feeling of hate for men, I thought they were my enemies, they are the ones blamed for the disasters happening for us, women.

But today, I see all of these thoughts and positions as funny memories.
*****
After I got married, I realized after many long years that I do enjoy being a wife, calm and peaceful. I became a wife that seeks more partnership than leadership in her life.
I found out that this role is giving my personality its glamour and let me feel more like a grown-up, it gives my life the taste of success, I don’t feel forced to take this role... at all.
But it is an interesting position, to participate in work and participate in the responsibilities of the house and family, and keep the properties of my character, be an intelligent elegant female, and conservative… this is the image that I reached to after years of being lost searching for myself. “Who am I? What do I want to be?”
When I became a mother, after I had Raed my first child, I figured out that the happiness that motherhood can bring to me cannot be compared to any other feeling in the world.
I used to take care for all the details and rituals of motherhood, in spite of the difficulties of my life and living abroad alone, away from my family, and in spite of being busy in my work as an engineer that didn’t give me the chance of having long vacations. I used to breast feed all of my children, although before my marriage I thought it’s a primitive thing to do.
I realized that it was just the beginning of a long path, full of love and sacrifices... called “motherhood”. I didn’t have enough hours to sleep at night watching my babies growing slowly, and go to work the next day with a pale face and red eyes… but I never regretted it, the value of my kids was increasing in my heart… and just then I could understand why mothers feel so much pain if they lost a child after all of this pain, and I could understand why did our prophet Mohammad say “the heaven in under the feet of mothers”
*******

Now I see the world in a new way, I’m having different ideas. I’m not asking for equality anymore… I’m asking for justice, it is more peaceful and more beautiful. Equality is utopic a bit and cannot be implied in our society.
Some days ago I noticed a picture for a women demonstration in one of the Iraqi newspapers.
Women wearing black Aba covering their bodies, and their faces say they are housewives; they looked very simple and maybe not even educated
The demonstration was asking for the separation between religion and politics!!!
I stood still… staring at the faces, and the requests…
Do they understand the meaning of this slogan? Who arranged the demonstration? What was told to them to let them go and participate in this protest?
I laughed and laughed
What does it mean? Why would Iraqi women to protest and ask for the separation between authorities??
What’s the women interest in that?
We are in the beginning of a new era, trying to build a new society for Iraqis… discussing such topics is like running in a mine field. If such topics are to be discussed, they should be discussed in a proper way, carefully and rationally.
I said to myself, people who arranged such a demonstration are either naïve daydreamers, or some people who enjoy turning tables without a vision.
The rearrangement of the women rights will not happen by increasing the number of free minded women and revolutionary women standing outside the traditions system just to prove to the west (or to let the west prove to its self) that we had a great jump of evolution, these are childish ideas.
Even the women in the west, the majority of them are respected intelligent women that respect the values of their communities, and I believe that respecting the social values isn’t a weak point that must be substituted, its completely the other way around, values give the individual and the society more power and respect.
I’ll have more understanding to my ideas when I act like a polite decent woman than if I was a rude rebel that cannot find anything else that enemies and sarcastic answers.
I don’t think that sharp and loud slogans can be a good start for improving the situation of us, Iraqi women. The prophet used to say: “Make things easy as much as you can”, and at the end of the road we are still an Islamic country, so instead of having extreme requests that would hurt many of us, we can reach to med-way compromises that can give everyone his space to live and let others live.
*******
Women have all the space to learn and work without forgetting the values of their religion. Women are asked to participate in building their societies, but without forgetting the limits and borders that their cultures respect.
*******

I have basic ideas, that need to be discussed more, but I hope they’ll be fine as a beginning for a better life for Iraqi women.
Education, for example, is a priority. Many rural areas and villages cannot give the chance for their girls to study because of the lack of schools. Maybe some public campaigns could b helpful to let the parents know how important education is for girls.
Improving women’s job market and vacancies; by starting a women quota system that can guarantee some important positions for women, and open the door for their official participation in rebuilding their country.
Maybe starting some social activities and programs would activate the spirit of participation for women, by starting small community based clubs for children and their mothers, and giving them some useful lectures and seminars about the every day’s life reaching to the political and social life and how to improve it. This can include also some training for how to use the internet and computers, and can involve some health presentations and instructions.
Financial wise, starting some families to start micro projects for producing home made goods can help bonding the families, and the neighborhoods, and improve the quality of the traditional products that can give the spirit of belonging to the society more taste and scent.
Giving more space is important for the Iraqi women to start functioning as a partner in building our country, and giving them free time is important too, maybe starting some small kindergarten projects would help many mothers have sometime for themselves.
All of these alternatives can open the doors and shed the light on women spent their lives in the shadows, living in the dark with no hope or happiness.
*******
I am not a specialized person in feminist issues, and women concerns… and I’m not qualified enough to produce a work plan, but I do have these main lines that could be a good starting point “En shaa Allah” (in god’s well).
The most dangerous thing is to start without a vision.
I hope Iraqi women will find themselves in a better life in the future.
And I hope we’ll know how to distinguish between fruitful ideologies and visions, and sharp chaotic slogans without meanings.

Friday 6/3

Happy news. The kidnapped boy has returned to his family last night. We will go to visit after lunch in order to offer our good wishes for his safe return. His family paid 20,000. That was the final price. They received the money from the father at a predetermined place and hours later released Ammar. Upon his release the kidnappers kissed him and asked him to deliver greetings to his father. We saw Ammar in the evening, he looked good and was smiling. They didn?t hurt him at all. He was locked up in a small room and he was fed well (kebab and chicken). He was held in a house outside Baghdad. We didn?t know if we should laugh or cry when we heard him talk about the kidnappers. In my heart I feel anxiety and fear. Who will stop these people. Till when? Who will be their next victim?

*******

The weather is warm in Baghdad, in fact it is hot. The summer has arrived suddenly. Some remains of cold might show up in the coming days. Then a short spring season will come. Then the summer will attack us. And the electricity outages. Oh God! I don?t even want to imagine that. I hope the electricity situation will improve this summer. Today we will remove some carpets in certain areas in the house, like hallways and such. In the summer we remove all the carpets from all the house including the dining room, the living room and the bedrooms. Carpets give a beautiful and warm look to the house. But the hot Baghdad weather makes us sacrifice the beauty in order to get the cold and naked tiles. I also have put away the warm and heavy blankets, then I will start a campaign of washing and ironing, this will last for several days. Then I will put the blankets into nylon bags to be stored on top of the closets for next year. God willing we will still be alive then.

*****

I received pictures of cities in Australia and the US. Beautiful and amazing pictures. I am so happy to get them. But then I feel sad when I see the destroyed Baghdad. What should I send back? I will look for pictures of Baghdad to place on the website. I hope things get better so that I could take good and beautiful pictures.
