A Family in Baghdad

Dear Raed…
Baghdad is calm today…
But it is seems like a frightening silence that hides a big explosion…
We asked in the morning about the bombs of yesterday…
It appeared that the American tanks were targeting some shops in the main market.
Thank God those shops were closed.
But many people told us that they saw an American APC burning in the night and it was removed in the early morning…
Americans are gathering near the entrance of our neighborhood…
Tanks and soldiers with machine guns…
They look terrifying…
They are staying away from the centers of the Iraqis with RPGs...
Everyone is expecting another long night full of violence…
We will spend the night in the “Safe Room”,
The one we used to hide in last year during the war!
The news of Falluja is not clear,
But I heard that people are arranging a blood donation campaign.
They say that hospitals are full with injured and killed people.
Only god can protect us from what’s happening…
These days are much darker than the days of Saddam Husein.

بغداد هادئة اليوم
لكنه هدوء مخيف تحس انه يخفي وراءه انفجارا ما سيأتي بعد قليل
في الصباح سألنا عن القذائف التي أطلقت يوم أمس أين سقطت
فتبين انها سقطت على المحلات في السوق
الحمد لله انها كانت مغلقة
لكن شهود عيان يقولون ان ثمة آلية امريكية احرقت في الليل وتم سحبها في الصباح
الآن يقفون على مدخل المنطقة
بدبابات ومشاة يقفون على الشارع وبأيديهم البنادق
منظرهم مرعب
وبعيدين عن تمركز جماعة القاذفات
اتوقع ليلة ساخنة من المواجهات
أظننا سنمضي الليل في الغرفة المحصنة
التي كنا نختبيء بها أيام الحرب قبل سنة
اخبار الفلوجة غامضة لكني سمعت عن حملة تبرع بالدم
يقولون المستشفيات ممتلئة
الله يستر مما سيأتي
هذه أيام أشد سوادا من أيام صدام حسين

I was sleeping, because f my headache,
but some minutes ago we heard very near explosions
American tanks are bombing some buildings in our neighborhood, maybe the shia mosque,,
I think some people attacked Americans an hour ago, and they came now to shoot them back
I'm still shaking!
I'm sure this night is going to be really long...

ثم سمعت صوت اطلاقات قوية قريبة
قفزت مذعورة ,ماذا حصل؟؟؟
دبابة أمريكية تقف أمام بيتنا في الظلام
وأطلقت قذيفتي هاون باتجاه السوق في حي الجهاد
أظن أن ثمة من أطلق عليهم قذيفة قبل ساعة
الوضع متوتر وغير آمن
أتمنى أن يسود الهدوء سريعا
ما زلت أرتجف...
الليل سيكون طويلا مخيفا

Good morning Baghdad.
Baghdad is keeping silent, streets are empty, no pedestrians and no cars.
I can’t hear the noise of American tanks and air fighters too!
Where did they go?!?!
Maybe they went to surround the fighting areas, in Baghdad and other cities.
Sun is really shining today, and the air is a bit chilly.
Houses didn’t open their doors or windows, boys and girls didn’t go to schools…
This is how Baghdad looks today…
I remembered the days of the war one year ago…
We went through the same scenario! The American army surrounding the city, the Iraqi people hiding in their houses, and the army of Saddam fighting against Americans.
Well, today we have the army of Sadr instead.

When did all of this tension start?
Maybe two week ago…
After the assassination of Sheikh Yassin of Hamas.
I think that was the spark that started everything…
People went out in the streets protesting and demonstrating againd Israel and The United States.
Some days after that, Muqtada AsSadr declared that he is the attacking arm of Hamas and Hizb Allah, and that he can take this responsibility.
And people applauded and clapped!
Then the American forces closed his journal, and surrounded his office.
There I think the crisis started.
The Iraqi street was boiling like a volcano, feeling sad and angry of what is happening in Palestine, and it just needed a small spark, to turn the fire of hell…
Before that, the Falluja events happened, that I didn’t met a single Iraqi that felt comfortable with it to happen.
People here were against what happened in Falluja, but the American Administration considered what happened as an excuse to start punishing people there…
Yesterday’s night witnessed the fighting of Falluja, and the fighting with Sadr Army.
Our neighbour rang us in the late night, be careful and don’t go out, he said.
“They are holding RPGs in the nearby Husainyya (Shia mosque) and waiting for Americans to come, they want to burn them”
I couldn’t sleep yesterday’s night… feeling nervous and waiting for explosions…
At the morning we went to ask the neighbour what happened, he said that other neighbours went and convinced the soldiers to calm down.
It is really a mess… chaos is the master…

Yesterday, Baghdad’s streets were full of cars, and full of American army cars and tanks too…
Today Baghdad it empty… no civilians and no Americans..
It is around 3 in the afternoon now, and I didn’t notice any American soldier from the morning, here in our area or on my way to work…
It’ just as if the ground swallowed them!
Some vendors came to the shop today, one of them from AsSadr city in Baghdad, I know him for years now.
Come! Tell us what is happening, I asked him…
How did you reach to here? Hoe did you go out of your home?
He said that Americans allowed them to go outside the city…
“It is calm now, but yesterday’s night was like hell… shooting and fighting… and people killed from both sides… an American tank was hit and burned, but an American helicopter took it away so that journalists won’t see it.”
I asked him about the Hummer cars that were destroyed…
“Yes, we destroyed them, disband them and sold them.”
What?! I was shocked! Where did u sell them?? Who bought them??
He didn’t seem to find the idea very strange… “We sell them to (Mraidi) market… they melt them and use them for other purposes”
That was funny! I laughed… so, tell me more about what happened yesterday”
He smiled, “at the night rockets and bullets were targeting them from all directions”, he laughed, “and some weapons were sent to us from Falluja too… they said they’ll send as much as we need in the future!”
But! I was wondering: “how did Falluja send weapons in the time they are under siege?”
He laughed, and went out… “they are foreigners, they are enemies, and some of them are Jewish too. We will fight them until they leave Iraq”.
He left.
And I was thinking, those who Saddam was their number one enemy that used to make the same thing with them from time to time, and here they are surrounded with missiles and soldiers another time.
The Shia poor neighbourhoods are the most effected, (Thawra, Sho`ala, Huryya, Kathmyya…)
And southern cities… all of them taking a part of this uprising.
And when I ask people whether they think Muqtada AsSadr is worth to be killed for, I have the same answer most of the time: “It is not about Muqtada, we are fighting an occupation that insults our pride, we refuse it and reject it.”
What about Sistani?
Everyone is waiting for his position.

I want to think about what is happening, and analyse it… far away from the Iraqi regular Joes analysis…
Muqtada AsSadr is a young man, with a very small experience, someday some months ago if he wanted to represent himself as a leader no one would have noticed him.
But today, he is a symbol that hundreds of thousands of Iraqis support him…
Why????
Because this poor broken majority that is hungry since the days of Saddam, feel disappointed. After a year of occupation all what they got was empty promises.
No job vacancies, no new projects to enhance their situation, everyone is lost in the cycle of void and violence.
What would keep them peaceful?
If I was in their place, with little education and no work, and a limit ability for recognizing events… I would have done the same.
The are the flammable majority, like dry grass that waits for a small burning match to turn into hell.

I wish if this conflict stops, but even if it stopped it is going to explode again if the American administration didn’t change its policy towards the people of the world, if this administration didn’t change the (marginize the other) policy, unfortunately everyone is going to pay and lose more.

The American administration try to give the impression for the American people that there is an ignorant terrorist leader that controls the people’s minds…
But the truth is that this administration doesn’t know how to gain the trust of these people, that’s why they leave the door of possibilities opened.
People here are depressed and frustrated… they are ready to sacrifice their lives to build a better future for their children…
The American wrong policy in understanding people and their feelings is getting its results, this is the result: more killing and destruction… for both Iraqis and Americans.
Everyday more Americans and Iraqis are killed, and I feel pain in my heart… why???
There is a big mistake… a big mistake that this administration is making, and it must rearrange its priorities. They should help the Iraqi people take the rational option, instead of closing all the doors except the violence one.
Iraqi people don’t have other options, other leaders… who do you want them to listen to? To the CPA? No one respect them at all.
People are really tired of these endless cycles.
It is the responsibility of the American administration to understand these people, didn’t this administration come all the way to Iraq to help them and give them freedom?
It the Americans didn’t know the right way in handling the situation, it will be their disaster... Iraqis are living in tragic situation since ever… and the Iraqi proverb says: The wet man doesn’t feel afraid of the rain.

Only a smile full of bitterness is what I have after Americans decided to send more soldiers to Iraq.

صباح الخير يا بغداد...
بغداد صامتة...الشوارع شبه فارغة من الناس والسيارات..
ولا صوت لدبابات وآليات أمريكية في الأرض أو السماء !!
أين ذهبوا؟؟؟
ربما يتمركزون حول المناطق الأكثر سخونة في بغداد والمدن الأخرى...
الشمس مشرقة والهواء بارد...
والبيوت لم تفتح أبوابها ولا شبابيكها...ولا أولاد وبنات خرجوا للمدارس...
هذا هو الحال اليوم في بغداد...
تذكرت أيام الحرب قبل سنة من الآن ...
كنا نعيش نفس الأجواء...جيش يحيط بالمدينة, وشعب يختبيء في البيوت, وأنصار صدام حسين
يواجهون الأمريكان...
واليوم أنصار مقتدى الصدر...

متى بدأ التوتر في الأجواء ؟؟
ربما منذ اسبوعين ؟؟
منذ حادث اغتيال الشيخ ياسين مسؤول حماس؟؟
أظن هذه كانت البداية...
خرج الناس الى الشوارع بمظاهرات غاضبة , ضد أميركا واسرائيل..
ثم بعد أيام أعلن مقتدى الصدر انه يريد أن يكون في العراق الجناح الضارب للأعداء مثل حماس وحزب الله
وانه مستعد لهذا الدور.. وصفق له الناس ,.وجاءت القوات الأمريكية وأغلقت صحيفته..وحاصرت مكتبه..
هنا بدأت الأزمة...
الشارع يغلي ويفور من الحزن والغضب لما يحدث في فلسطين , ويحتاج الى شرارة صغيرة..لإشعال جحيم جديد
وقبلها جاءت أحداث الفلوجة الهمجية, لم ألتقي عراقيا واحدا يؤيدها...كانت أفعالا شنيعة غبية حاقدة ...
أثارت مشاعر الناس جميعا, ورفضوها...لكن الإدارة الأمريكية اتخذتها ذريعة جديدة لتصعيد الموقف في الفلوجة
فكان يوم أمس, محاصرة الفلوجة ومحاصرة مكتب مقتدى الصدر, والمواجهات مع أنصاره..
وفي الليل ..ازداد الوضع سوءا..في معظم مناطق العراق .
اتصل أحد الجيران وقال لا تخرجوا , توجد حسينية (جامع للشيعة) وضعوا أمامها القاذفات وينتظرون مرور الآليات الأمريكية ليحرقوها...انقبض قلبي ...وبقيت أفكر طوال الليل وانتظر صوت الإنفجارات...
في الصباح رأيته وسألته...قال ذهب أصحاب البيوت المجاورة والمحلات وتكلموا معهم , وقالوا لهم سوف تؤذون بيوتنا وعوائلنا...فسحبوا القاذفات وذهبوا....
الوضع مؤلم ومحبط...والفوضى سيدة الموقف .

بالأمس كانت بغداد مزدحمة الشوارع , والآليات الأمريكية تملأ التقاطعات..
واليوم شوارع بغداد شبه فارغة من السيارات والمشاة , وفارغة تماما من أية آلية عسكرية أمريكية لحد الآن...
الساعة الآن الثالثة عصرا...منذ الصباح حين خروجي للعمل ولحين عودتي لم أسمع أو أرى آلية أمريكية , لا في طريق المطار ولا في شوارع أخرى...كأن الأرض ابتلعتهم...
وجاء بعض الباعة المتجولون...بعضهم من مدينة الثورة وأعرفه منذ سنوات..
تعال واحكي لنا...قلت له.
كيف خرجت من بيتك ووصلت الى هنا ؟؟؟
توجد حواجز أمريكية حول المدينة لكنهم سمحوا لنا بالخروج للعمل...قال.
طيب , وكيف الأخبار هناك.؟؟..سألته
الآن هدوء , لكن مساء الأمس كانت مشتعلة مثل الجحيم...اطلاق نار ومواجهات...وقتلى من الطرفين, عراقيين وجنود أمريكان...وأحترقت لهم دبابة وجاءت هليكوبتر رفعتها حتى لا يراها الصحفيون.
وسمعنا عن سيارات همفي هاجمتوها ؟؟؟
قال , اي, واحترقت ثم فسخناها وراحت للبيع..
وضعت يدي على فمي دهشة , أين بعتوها ؟؟؟ وماذا تستفيدون منها؟؟
هز كتفه بلا مبالاة: في سوق مريدي...يذوبونها ويستفيدون من النحاس والحديد...
ضحكت وبقيت مذهولة...طيب , وماذا حصل أمس ؟؟
في الليل تأتي القذائف عليهم من كل اتجاه...وضحك, وجاءتنا أسلحة من الفلوجة , وقالوا خذوا ما تريدون وإن احتجتم فسنرسل المزيد..
وتساءلت من أين جاءت والفلوجة محاصرة؟؟؟
ضحك ولم يجيب...ثم خرج الى الشارع...وقال : انهم أجانب , انهم أعداء , وفيهم يهود...هكذا قالوا لنا
وسنظل نفاتلهم حتى يخرجون...
بقيت أفكر...هؤلاء هم الذين كان صدام حسين عدوهم الأول..وكان يفعل ذات الشيء معهم , بين الحين والحين, وها هم مرة أخرى محاصرين ومدافع وصواريخ تلقى عليهم...
المناطق الشيعية الفقيرة هي الأشد اشتعالا...الثورة والشعلة , ثم الحرية والكاظمية...
والمحافظات الجنوبية ربما كلها تشارك في التمرد...
وعندما أسأل الناس هل مقتدى الصدر حقا يستحق أن تعرضوا أنفسكم لنيران المدفعية والصواريخ؟؟؟
والجواب: لسنا نناقش من هو مقتدى الصدر, يستحق أو لا يستحق, لكننا أمام احتلال يهين كرامتنا , ونرفضه,
ونتصدى له...
والسيستاني؟؟؟
الكل ينتظر إشارة تهدئة منه, الصدر والأمريكان والمفاوضات جارية....

أريد أن أفكر بما يحدث , بهدوء وبعيدا عن إبن الشارع...
مقتدى الصدر شاب صغير العمر قليل التجربة, في ظرف ما , لو نزل للشارع العراقي لترشيح نفسه, لمنصب ما...فلن يجد إلا أقلية تتعاطف معه على ذكرى حبهم لأبيه, لكنه اليوم, يصبح الرمز, ومئات الآلآف تلتف حوله وتؤيده...في الشوارع أو البيوت...
لماذا؟؟؟؟
لأن هذه الأكثرية مسحوقة جائعة منذ أيام صدام حسين , ومرت سنة على الإحتلال , وهم لا يسمعون إلا وعودا..
لا فرص عمل ولا مشاريع جديدة تحسن من ظروفهم, ودوامة فراغ, ودوامة عنف. قريبة أم بعيدة ...فما الذي يمنعهم من الإنخراط في الدوامات؟؟؟
لو كنت مثلهم , بثقافة قليلة, وبلا عمل , وقدرة محدودة على تفسير الأمور, لفعلت مثلهم...
أكثرية مستعدة للإشتعال والثورة, مثل كومة قش جاف...ينتظر قطعة كبريت صغيرة, ليتحول الى جحيم...

أتمنى أن تهدأ الأمور...وحتى لو هدأت فستعود لتشتعل من جديد (إذا ) لم تغير الإدارة الأمريكية سياستها تجاه الشعوب...
إذا لم تتوقف عن سياسة طمس الآخر ..وتهميشه, وتشويه صورته...فإنها للأسف ستدفع المزيد من الضحايا
من هنا وهناك...
المسؤولون الأمريكيون يصورون الموضوع لشعوبهم ان ثمة قائد جاهل ارهابي يريد أن يستحوذ على عقول الناس...
والحقيقة أن أميركا لا تعرف كيف تكسب مودة وثقة هؤلاء الناس...فتركت الفراغ مفتوحا لكل الإحتمالات..
والناس محبطة ومكبوتة...ومستعدة أن تضحي بنفسها من أجل أن تصنع تاريخا جديدا مشرقا..حتى لو( توهمت) أن هذا القائد هو الذي سيوصلها الى برالأمان...
سياسة أمريكا الخاطئة في فهم الناس وأحاسيسهم, وتجاوزها, ها هي تدفع ثمنها غاليا...بمزيد من القتل والدمار...
للشعب العراقي والجيش الأمريكي...
كل يوم يموت فيه عراقي أو أمريكي يحزن قلبي وينعصر ألما...لماذا؟؟؟
ثمة خطأ....ثمة خطأ ترتكبه الإدارة الأمريكية وعليها أن تعيد ترتيب طريقتها في التعامل مع هذه الشعوب...
ولا تدفعها الى اختيارات خاطئة متطرفة, لأنها أغلقت باب الخيارات الأعقل...
العراقي ليس أمامه سوى مجلس حكم يتلقى التعليمات من بريمر , وهو مجلس لم ينتخب , ولا يعترف به الشعب كسلطة حاكمة, وقائد مثل الصدر ..هو بالتأكيد ليس النموذج المطلوب لتمثيل أكثرية الشعب, واحتلال يريد أن يفرض نفسه بأي طريقة....
الناس تعبت من هذه الدوامات.....ويريدون فرصة للعيش بسلام وكرامة...يريدون أن يعملوا ويكون لديهم
دخل مناسب , وأولادهم يذهبون للمدارس بأمان, وحكومة تدافع عن حقوقهم , حكومة مستقلة من الشعب.
المفروض إن الإدارة الأمريكية جاءت لتساعد الشعب , لا أن تستفزه وتهينه فيصبح بيئة مناسبة لإستقطاب العنف....
المفروض من الإدارة الأمريكية أن تفهم كيف يفكر هذا الشعب وترضيه, لا أن ترغمه على التفكير بطريقتها وتفسير الأمور من وجهة نظرها...فهذه عقلية متكبرة فاشلة في حل المشاكل...
إن لم تتغير طريقة التفكير هذه ...فستكون كارثة على أميركا نفسها...
أما هذه الشعوب فلسان حالها يقول...ما يهم ؟؟؟ المبلل لا يخاف من المطر....
فقد تعودت مواجهة الموت وتقديم الضحايا منذ عشرات السنين....

وأفتح محطات الأخبار لأسمع عن تطورات الموقف...
فأسمع ان أميركا سترسل المزيد من القوات الى العراق...
وابتسم بمرارة...وأحس بصداع شديد...
